SHSID Students Won the Outstanding NCTM Award in Mathematical Modeling Contest

February 28, 2020

In the newly released results of the 22nd Annual High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM), a team of 4 junior students from SHSID — Alex, Michelle, Stanley and Andrew — won the outstanding award.

HiMCM is organized by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP). In this international contest, a total of 791 teams from 324 schools competed by writing a modeling paper up to 23 pages on one of the two provided problems about free energy consumption and plastic water bottle bans. For each problem, the top 1% of all the teams receive an Outstanding. From year 2018 on, two outstanding teams—one from each problem—are further awarded the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) prize at the final judging. The team from our school was honored to be one of the two NCTM winners, which can be attributed to their excellent cooperation, a complete and creative model, and the impressive format of the paper.

From the Honorable Mention Award in 2017 and the Finalist Award in 2018 to now the Outstanding NCTM Award in 2019, the team has put persistent effort towards mathematical modeling during the past three years. From this competition, the team has developed skills not only in critical thinking and mathematical applications, but also in teamwork and tenacity. Congratulations to them!
