Puxi Grade 3: Reciting Poems in Dialects

April 23, 2019

During their Native Chinese class on April 22nd, all the third graders had a scintillating poetry recitation show. Using Cantonese with various tones, the sweet and agreeable Wu dialect, or many kinds of humorous and vigorous northern Chinese dialects, the students recited poems that had a special, classic appeal. Some poems rhyme more when read in a dialect. Every dialect is a special cultural symbol and has its own delicacy. Within each dialect, there are deposits of culture, exquisite and indescribable moods, and a connective sense of humor. We hope that this activity can lead students to have awareness about protecting their own dialects. Dialect, as a precious intangible cultural heritage, is a kind of continuous nostalgia. It is like the hometown dishes made by one’s mother; it will be inherited by generations.
