Principal Feng's Speech on Class of 2019 Graduation Ceremony

Keep a Simple Soul

Dear parents, teachers and students,

Good morning!

Today we gather together here to celebrate the graduation of the senior class of 2019. Congratulations!

Every year, the senior students demonstrate what kind of a school SHSID really is with their outstanding achievements and the great memories they leave us with. After graduation, as the alumni of a century-old school, you will head to different corners of the world, continuing to strive for a better future. I hope you all keep a simple soul and are patient as you work to achieve the success of becoming a useful person contributing to the whole society.

This senior class witnessed the 25th anniversary of SHSID in 2018. In the past 25 years, SHSID has developed and evolved as it faced numerous challenges and difficulties. The students of this senior class not only inherited the spirit of the former SHSID graduates, but also developed their own independent character, which they showcased and presented as a valuable gift for the celebration of the 25th anniversary of SHSID with their outstanding performances. Thank you again so very much!

I believe that the true value of a good school lies not only in the teaching of knowledge and the development of good habits and abilities of its graduates, but also in the guidance of those graduates to pursue their own life path and dreams persistently. From the beginning of every school year, I often hear about the good news of the college acceptances of our senior students. The whole community is happy about the good news of top college admission results, which sounds like great music to accompany the blossoming of beautiful flowers on campus. The beautiful music is getting louder and louder year by year, proving that SHSID is developing very quickly with the efforts of all teachers and students.

Maybe not every student has received the offer of his or her dream school, but I am sure that every one of you is blessed. Graduating from high school is only the beginning of a new part of your life. I believe that as long as you keep a simple soul, you will achieve more success in the future.

Dear students, when you grow older and begin to work in society, you will start to recall the happy days of your high school. Wherever you go, you may forget most of what you learned in high school, but you won’t forget your study buddies. Your classmates are true friends that you’ll have throughout your whole life. Cherish these friendships dearly, as they are irreplaceable.

There are many talented students in this senior class. Please allow me to share some of their great stories written by their homeroom teachers, without mentioning their names.

She is a very intelligent student with the highest GPA in the whole grade, and she is talented in drawing, playing guitar and sports as well. She will continue her higher education at Princeton university…

They are the true lovers of birds. They have been persistently observing the birds on campus throughout high school, established the first bird observation club and published a birding magazine. I have given the magazines as precious gifts to some friends, and they were all amazed by the high quality of it.

He participated in the ShangZhong Cup piano competition many times. His impromptu piano music played for the given cartoon video touched every listener’s heart and he won the first prize several times.

He loves academic competitions, especially Math competitions. He has won many math competitions and was once chosen as one member of the Chinese Math Olympiad trainee team. His academic ability is equal to the local Math gifted students.

He runs extremely fast and broke the school record for the 100m dash, setting a new record that will be incredibly difficult to break.

She sings as well as a professional singer, and she is the champion of the school’s Top 10 singer competition.

He was an excellent competitor in the World Youth Fencing Championship and won silver medals in the Asia Youth Fencing Championship several times.

She is the captain of the school’s women’s volleyball team, a member of the school women’s basketball team and she once won  first place in  the high jump event during the school sports meet.

He plays cello in the school orchestra, and he is the leading player in the school String band. More impressively, he has taken hundreds of great photos of school events and activities and created many short movies and videos to record the great moments of our high school life.

How talented you all are! I am so proud of you! Although I am not able to share all the great stories provided by the homeroom teachers today, I will hold onto them, and whenever I read them again later, I am sure I will still be greatly moved.

Our students are truly talented and many of their academic achievements go far beyond what typical students can achieve. In these years, the school has been updating the school curriculum system, aiming to become a highly academic, research-based and innovative world-leading secondary institution by providing more diverse courses on a broader platform. At the same time, the school spares no efforts to develop every student’s potential and individual characteristics, hoping that our graduates will become global leaders who employ their broad vision to achieve long-term impactful goals. We are reflecting, researching and discovering a new path and we will succeed in the end.

In my mind, the most memorable experience of high school can be described with one phrase - keep it simple. Students should study well and also have fun. By studying hard and playing hard, young students can truly improve themselves and prepare well for more challenges in the future.

Dear students, when you leave SHSID and arrive at college, you will find that everything will be different. You have to face all the difficulties and challenges alone. But you shouldn’t worry too much because in high school you have gained the abilities needed to face those challenges. Remember: keep it simple and you will achieve higher goals in the future!

Best wishes to all of you! And remember to come back to school no matter what you have experienced because SHSID will always be your home.

Thank you very much!
