High School Biology Department: Professional Development Day

On December 25, 2019, a professional development (PD) training for high school biology teachers was held in the State Key Laboratory of Bioreactor Engineering at the East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST). At the beginning of the training, several teachers from ECUST introduced the School of Biotechnology, including its history, faculty, research, talent cultivation, and future development. The focus of the introduction was on their scientific research and outstanding research areas. Then, the head of high school biology department introduced the curriculum, faculty, students’ specialties, as well as the research projects and biology competitions SHSID students have participated in. Teachers from the two schools discussed possible ways to cooperate, including in students’ science projects, biology week lectures, project-based learning classes off campus, and so on. At last, teachers from SHSID had a tour of the State Key Laboratory. Various sophisticated instruments in the lab showed everyone the current development of science as well as the need of continuing to learn new things. Teachers asked questions about these instruments and discussed possible applications of the instruments in student projects.
