Grade 11-12: Winter Ball 2019
On Saturday, December 21st, the students from grades11 and 12, dressed in dazzling gowns and suits, gathered at Makan awaiting the annual Winter Ball celebration hosted by the Associated Student Body (ASB). Looking around, students could see glittering golden lamps and elegant geometric figures decorating the walls. It was as if they had stepped into a whole new world.
The students were first greeted by the reception team and directed them to the signature board where they left down memorable messages. At 5:00 PM, the event officially began, and students began to participate in all kinds of activities: charades, whisper challenge, fear pong, Russian Roulette, and more. Many also stopped at the Photo Booth to take aesthetic pictures, register for the King & Queen competition, and sign up for the upcoming Fashion Show.
At 6:00 PM, dinner was served: a full course buffet complete with salad, pasta, seafood, barbecue, scallops, and an assortment of delicious deserts. The dinner was also accompanied by a set of violin, piano, and vocal performances, making this segment of the event relaxing and enjoyable. Some students even declared that “the dinner was the best part of the entire event!”
After dinner, the students were satisfied and ready to have some real fun. A new series of larger activities began, featuring a Fashion Show, Limbo, Princess Hug, and Musical Chairs. In the Fashion Show, groups and individuals donned funky, stylish costumes and strutted down the runway and posed to a cheering audience. In Limbo, participants tested just how low they could go by attempting to bend under an ever lowering string. In Princess Hug—one of the biggest attractions of the night—a wide assortment of couples were faced with multiple challenges such as carrying a partner across the stage and answering rapid-fire questions like “What is one thing you dislike about your partner?”. In Musical Chairs, groups of eager participants skipped around to the music while vying for a seat on the winning chair. These activities were topped off by an amazing acapella performance by SHSID’s Human Orchestra.
Then, the lights dimmed as all the Junior ASBs and their partners stepped up and began the traditional Junior Dance. When they finished, this year’s King and Queen emerged and received their crowns to roaring applause. After some more dancing, it was finally time to say goodbye. This was truly a memorable, heartwarming event, especially to the seniors, for whom this is their last Winter Ball before going off to college. What a wonderful way to start off the Christmas holidays and wrap up 2019!
