Middle School Biology Department: 8th Graders Created a Taxonomic Key

October 29, 2019

On the morning of October 22nd, eighth graders went to the lab to complete a project about the taxonomic key. Taxonomic keys are keys that consist of paired statements and physical characteristics of different organisms. For the project, students were required to create their own taxonomic key by observing different specimens. Furthermore, students were trained to have the ability to distinguish the differences in physical traits between organisms. In their recent biology classes, eighth graders learned about the modern classification of organisms, binomial nomenclature, and the eight levels of taxonomy. This project helped them to consolidate the knowledge they learned and better understand the utilization of taxonomic keys in daily life.
