Grade 3: Dictionary Look-up Contest

September 30, 2019

On Sept. 25th, the Chinese Show and Tell class for the Grade 3 native Chinese classes carried out a competition about looking up words in a dictionary. All the kids were involved in this competition. They worked together in groups and overcame the challenging questions step by step.

This competition is made up of 3 parts. For the first part, all the students need to find the pronunciations for many unusual characters. The second part tests how they grasp the radicals and strokes of Chinese characters. In the third part, students are required to circle the most suitable meaning for each character when they are in a specific word.

When the competition started, all the kids quickly understood what they should do. Some of them looked up words, some wrote on the paper, and some thought about the meaning of the given words. The competition was intense; everyone was so into it and wanted to finish the paper on time with high quality.

When the competition ended, teachers announced the winning groups. This competition not only checked their ability to look up words in a dictionary but also emphasized their group work ability. A dictionary is a silent teacher, but it plays a very important role in Chinese learning. We hope that all the students can apply this ability in their studies and lives, cultivating the good habit of looking up words in a dictionary rather than asking and studying independently.
