Grade 9-10: ASB Election

September 25, 2019

During CAS class on September 18th, 2019, the freshmen and sophomores of SHSID gathered at the primary school auditorium for the yearly Associate Student Board election. The ASB is not only involved in planning engaging student activities that reduce stress, but also represents all the students. After the grand entrance of about 450 students, the student body settled down and exchanged words of excitement with each other regarding the potential ASB activities, while the ASB candidates paced around, muttering their speeches to themselves. This crucial election would determine the members of the ASB for the 1st semester.

The election began with an introduction of the election rules by the event host. 23 final candidates – after rounds of elimination in their homerooms – competed to run for ASB this year. Each student was allowed to vote for up to 13 people. All candidates were expected to prepare succinct speeches as to why they are worthy enough to be part of the ASB. The candidates’ memorable speeches portrayed themselves as certain figures to the public, thus heavily influencing the students’ decisions in voting. Candidates also created short videos, which gave the audience insight into their talents and preferred positions in the ASB. Throughout the 23 speeches and videos, students cheered the candidates on tirelessly and with respect. By the end of the day, 9th and 10th graders alike filled in their ballots after thoughtful consideration. Whether you are successfully voted in for ASB, or simply a student who desires to be heard, we all hope that the students of 2019 – 2020 will lead a great year ahead of us.
