On November 22, 2022, students and teachers from SHSID Pudong Campus held a special math activity -- Math Carnival. Teachers of each grade prepared a variety of math activities for the young explorers to explore in order to let them enjoy learning mathematics. The carnival took the form of rotations, where students could choose five math activities which they were interested in within a limited time. Let's follow the little explorers and see what kind of fun activities were available!

The first-grade teachers prepared “Connect 4” and “Math Tangrams”. "Connect 4" required students to play in pairs, and the first one to finish connecting the four pieces into a line would win the game. This activity not only examined the students' observation skills, but also required them to use their spatial imagination skill. The "Math Tangrams" activity took the students to the gorgeous world of flat shapes, where the students used colorful tangrams to create some pictures, such as some common Arabic numerals, English letters, and cute animals.

The second-grade teachers created a fun world of math for the students through two activities, “101 points” and “Halli Galli”. In the "101 points" activity, students took turns rolling the dice to get the number of points and then added them up, whoever got 101 points first would win the game. “Halli Galli” required the students to use their sensitivity to the numbers, and the student who got the most cards by tapping the bell the fastest became the final winner.

The teachers from grade 3 prepared the “Cone Zilla” and “Number Klotski”. The “Cone Zilla” required the students to combine 10 colorful ice creams to make the most spectacular super ice cream cone. In the process, they had to make sure that the top ice cream number was bigger than the bottom number. The “Number Klotski” game provided a great opportunity for students to constantly challenge themselves. As the squares slid around their fingertips, students exercised their coordination skills as well as logical thinking abilities.

The grade 4 teachers combined basic addition & subtraction and geometry together. “Sudoku” was a classic math problem in which students completed Sudoku puzzles of varying difficulty through basic addition and subtraction. In this process, students exercised their computational and logical thinking skills. "Matching Talent" was a game in which students were asked to place cubes with different pictures on each side in the correct place according to the requirements. The participants competed in pairs to determine the winner – the student who completed the puzzle the fastest.

Teachers from grade 5 prepared “Blocks” and “Math matchsticks”. “Math matchsticks” was a very interesting math activity that involved moving a matchstick to make both sides of the equal sign balance. “Blocks” was a great exercise in geometry and spatial skills, where the student who could occupy the most territory with shapes on a small table won. In these two activities, the students had to think of various ways to solve the problem, which was fun and challenging.

Through this interesting and diverse math carnival adventure, the young explorers expanded their knowledge of interesting math and experienced the fun of math. We believe that they will carry this spirit of exploration forward in their future math learning.
