With the aim of “Cultivating Talent” in high school, Shanghai High School International Division（SHSID） implements an inclusive education from middle school through high school. Established with a high international standard, the school respects every student's personality and endeavors to set a solid foundation for the individualized and life-long development of every student by building an open and vibrant campus environment and by providing various academic platforms and non-academic extracurricular resources.

Spring is a hopeful season, and it is a fitting time to share the college admissions results that the senior class has received from universities all over the world. Furthermore, SHSID celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, which gives us an occasion to look back at our overall admissions results from recent years.

Voices from Class of 2023

1.  The senior class of 2023 has received offers from a range of top universities, such as Oxford, Cambridge, Ivy League universities, and other top 10 universities ranked by the U.S. News & World Report this year.

The total number of Oxford & Cambridge offers is 13 for 13 students; and the total offers from "Ivy League & other top 10" universities, including Princeton, Yale, Stanford, UPenn, Brown, Cornell, UChicago, Duke, and Johns Hopkins, are 10 for 9 students. In total, the senior class has received 23 offers from the most prestigious universities in 2023.

In recent years, the application results of SHSID to top universities in the United States have been based on the "one student, one school" policy, which acknowledges that each student’s best-fit school is based on a combination of individual skills and goals. This speaks to the school’s thoughtful attention to students' diversified characteristics, reflecting the school's pursuit of effective admission, rather than blindly pursuing the greatest number of admissions. The total number of Oxbridge admissions in the U.K. is approximately 5 to 6 offers each year, while the total number of Oxbridge admissions in 2023 reached a new record, including Oxford's Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) major, Cambridge’s Computer Science major, and Trinity College's Engineering major, which are extremely competitive. At the same time, there is very little overlap between the Oxbridge admissions and the Top 10 admissions in the U.S. The number of students admitted to the Top universities in 2022 and 2023 reached 18 and 19 respectively.

Some of the top universities in the U.K. and the U.S. have a continuous record of admitting SHSID students. For example, Yale University has sent admission notices to SHSID graduates for 6 consecutive years, Brown University for 9 consecutive years, and Cambridge University for 8 consecutive years.

Top university admissions over the years also include the University of Chicago, Duke University, Cornell University, and many other prestigious institutions. For example, the University of Chicago has admitted 13 SHSID students in the past 7 years, Duke University has admitted 7 SHSID students in the past 4 years, and Cornell University has admitted 11 students in the past 10 years.

"It is worth noting that in each year from 2016 to 2019, around 15 students were admitted by "Oxbridge + Ivy League + Top 10" schools; in each year from 2020 to 2023, the number remains above 20. As you can see, SHSID is maintaining a steady and increasing record of admissions to the top schools in the U.K. and the U.S. "

2. A number of top U.S. colleges and universities have been favoring SHSID graduates. For example, over the past five years, NYU has admitted about 90 SHSID students (15 this year), some of whom were admitted by the College of Business, which has a low acceptance rate; meanwhile, UC Berkeley and UCLA have admitted more than 60 SHSID students in the past five years (10 students this year). Universities such as Rice, Emory, Carnegie Mellon, Tufts, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, USC, and many others have offered admissions to our students in consecutive years as well.

Additionally, various top U.K. universities, especially the G5 schools ( University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Imperial College, LSE and UCL), have consistently extended offers to our students. For instance, the number of students admitted to G5 schools this year has now reached a record of 54.

3. At SHSID, students have been encouraged to make their own college choices based on their academic interests and future life path. Students are not restricted to choosing from among the traditional top schools or comprehensive universities but instead turn to the schools and majors that best suit their needs. For example, this year, two students have been admitted to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) of the University of Hong Kong and three students have been admitted to the International Business and Global Management (IBGM) program at the University of Hong Kong Business School, and these five offers are exceptionally valuable.

"This year, seven students were admitted to the top 10 liberal arts colleges in the United States according to the 2023 U.S. News and World Report ranking, including Swarthmore College, Wellesley College, Claremont McKenna College, and others. Wellesley College has admitted 8 students from SHSID in the past 5 consecutive years. This year, some students will go to top art colleges for further studies, such as University of the Arts London in the U.K., Pratt Institute, and Berklee College of Music in the U.S."

4. Every year, about 100 SHSID graduates choose to study at top universities in China, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Europe, Australia and other countries or regions. This year is no exception, and such applications are still in progress.

"At present, 4 admissions have been received from Tsinghua University in China; about 60 admissions have been received from the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia in Canada; 52 admissions have been received from the University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; 5 admissions have been received from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology; 5 admissions have been received from the University of Tokyo, Keio University, Waseda University, and Sophia University in Japan; 3 admissions have been received from Sciences Po in France; and 3 admissions have been received from the University of Sydney in Australia."

It is undeniable that admission to a prestigious university is exciting news, but when it comes to university applications, SHSID still insists that the right fit is more important than any ranking. On the journey of lifelong development, university admission is only a starting point. Whether one will truly be accomplished in the future and whether one can make contributions to society and all mankind will be determined by many factors, especially one's curiosity, passion, concentration, persistence, self-discipline and other qualities. The school sincerely hopes that no matter where our students go for further study, every one of them will hold on to his or her passion and love, maintain curiosity about the world and a thirst for knowledge, and above all, keep a kind and brave heart.

As the school year is coming to an end, it is important that all graduating students spare no effort to complete their studies and reach a successful end to high school life. Meanwhile, many university applications are still in progress; good luck to everyone! This year, the number of students taking IB, AP, and A-Level exams will reach a historic peak. We hope that all candidates, including our graduating students, can achieve the ideal results that they expect.
