Theatre Festival

September 13, 2022

1. Overview of the Theatre Festival

The Theatre Festival was established in 2018 and is held every year in November for one week. Integrating competition as well as exhibition, the featured plays consist of a variety of topics and include participants from across all grades in elementary, middle and high school. Each year, the theater festival has a different overarching theme. Students have the opportunity to discover and know themselves through the stage, and to experience love, art and life through performance.

2. Purpose of the Theatre Festival

The theater festival aims to improve students' language skills, self-awareness, interpersonal communication, imagination, creativity, leadership and self-confidence through performance, to provide opportunities for students with a passion for theater to display their work, and to be an effective test of theater classroom and club activities.

3. Content and Characteristics of the Theater Festival

The performance entries in the theater festival include realistic themes, traditional stories and innovative stage plays. The festival is divided into four sections: classical drama, modern drama, musicals and original student-work. With no requirements concerning language used or theatrical form or style, the theater festival also encourages students to exhibit adaptations of other plays or performance pieces. After a week of auditions, the final winning performances will be presented in a final closing ceremony wherein experts from outside the school will be invited to witness, review and supply their own commentary as special audience members.

4. Introduction of Past Theatre Festival

In 2018, only seven teams participated (basically just school’s the drama club), but its influence has inspired an atmosphere of theatricality that spreads across the whole of campus and even established the first instance of improvisational theater at SHSID. Since then, the Curtain Club, which trains students in improvisational theater, opened the door for future improvised performances. The theme of the 2020 festival was "Classic Plays, New Interpretations," which advocated innovative interpretations of classic and original plays, and featured "Best Adapted Play" and "Best Original Play" Awards. The themes are more colorful than previous years, including realistic themes, science fiction themes, historical plays, classical themes, innovative fusion stage plays, talk shows, etc. As the years have progressed, the theater festival has tended towards maturity and perfection.
