October 11, 2022

1.Overview of the Performance Season

In order to enhance students' artistic abilities in a comprehensive manner, create an elegant and rich atmosphere of art on campus, and highlight the nature and characteristics of disciplines in the fine and performing arts, since 2019 the Music and Drama Center has held a large-scale Student Art Performance Season in May. The event presents a series of eight special performances including vocal performance, instrumental music, dance, drama, and original music compositions. With more than 800 students participating each year, the Student Art Performance Season has become an effective way and an important avenue for students to showcase their achievements in the arts at Shanghai High School.

2.Purpose of the Performance Season

To create a high-level, professional performance platform, enhance artistic expression, stimulate artistic potential, cultivate literacy in the arts, and allow students to realize effectively what connections they can draw between what they have learned both inside and outside the classroom.

3.Specific Content and Implementation

The season is different from the art festival in both form and nature; it is closer to professional art colleges in terms of its conceptual design and closer to professional theater activities regarding its modality of management. It covers special sessions in vocal performance, dance, wind and string instruments, original musical compositions, drama, piano, and Musical Theatre, thereby comprising a total of eight special concerts or stage performances in order to better reflect arts education at our school. The Performance Season therefore represents the height of professionalism with regards to our arts teaching.

4.Introduction to previous Performance Season

The first season held in 2019, carefully built from publicity, planning, organization and rehearsal, successfully opened the first prologue of the season and laid a solid foundation for the smooth development of future seasons. In 2020, due to the pandemic, our season was held online, which allowed for students to continue their enthusiasm for the activity and accumulate experience in rehearsing and organizing a show online. 2021 coincided with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party, and the season was held under the title of "Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Founding of The Communist Party of China." In 2021, the 100th anniversary of the Founding of the Communist Party of China was the main theme of the season, and the works on display cover several red classics and Chinese works such as Salute to Youth, My Motherland, Birds Pay Homage to the Phoenix and Ode to the Red Flag. These works of art demonstrate the mastery of artistic expression through myriad performance styles.
