Grade 8: Our Gen Z Karaoke Competition

March 26, 2021

March 25th was a warm, sunny Thursday. Everybody in eighth grade had high spirits, itching for the karaoke competition that began in the afternoon. Twenty-eight students, along with quite a few teachers, had already practiced their songs, preparing to show off their vocal skills on stage.

The competition was held in the Zhentao building lecture hall. Chattering excitedly, the entire 8th grade settled in the lecture hall, waiting for the show to commence. There was a large variety of songs, consisting of many genres and styles.

The competition started with “烟花易冷” by Rich, which received enthusiastic applause from the audience. Following were several unique performances, including “The Diva Dance,” a whistle-singing song performed by 8 (5) Aaron, and “The Grenade” by 8 (2) Kevin. “勾指起誓” by 8 (4) Joy and 8 (3) Dora brought up waves of screaming and excitement from the audience. “The Loneliest Girl” by 8 (9) Maggie and 8 (11) Cheryl a highly melodic song; the chorus part was especially outstanding. Not to mention “POV” by 8 (11) Samantha K, in which she sang with intense enthusiasm. “出山” by 8 (12) Katrina and 8 (4) Rachel, “云烟成雨” by 8 (12) Jennifer and “Mine” by 8 (8) Colin, etc. were also impressive!

Throughout the competition, the hosts and hostesses continuously involved the crowd with interview questions to “special guests” to keep the audience interested.

To conclude the show, the grade 8 teachers performed “I Can Do Anything Better Than You” to wrap up the event. It cracked everybody up when the teachers argued like little children, saying “Yes, I can” and “No, you can’t” in a variety of different tones.

The karaoke competition ended in laughter; who won was not important but, the fun everyone had is what matters.
