Fall 2020 Grades 9-10 PBL Showcase

January 18, 2021

Grade 9 and Grade 10 students went to the lecture hall of Zhentao Building on January 11th and January 12th to conduct the PBL showcase in the form of fairs and presentations. This PBL-course showcase integrated the interest, knowledge, and innovation of the students.

Amazing Geometric Sketching by Software combines mathematics with painting. It uses dynamic geometry to expand the breadth of thinking and promotes students' enthusiasm for learning mathematics. In the course of French Musical Production and Performance, the students recorded short videos in advance, gathered their ideas from daily life, combined their performances with French, and fully demonstrated their ability of acting. In the Mock Trail course, the students gain wisdom from many past cases, improve their ability to analyze the cases in a litigation format through critical thinking and evidence, and learn how to use legal knowledge to solve some real-life commercial disputes. In the course of Racing Challenge, the students assembled a water-jet race car with their physics knowledge. On the day of the showcase, we experienced it running and spraying water on the scene, which was, indeed, full of fun.

In the Introduction to Python Programming course, the students write a program to crawl the downtown hotel data from the website Booking using a visualized interactive interface to show the hotel price, average score, ranking, traffic information, as well as the distance from the urban attractions, and then extract the useful information from massive data which can provide feasible suggestions for people to commute or travel. Another group of students used a web scaper with data mining methods to collect all kinds of comic strips from Internet and automatically generated PDF files which are quite practical and convenient for readers of comics.

The project-based learning course not only provides a platform for students to freely develop their personality and potential, but also, at the same time, encourages more students to engage in scientific innovation and artistic activities. We hope that, in the near future, there will be even more excellent courses to stimulate students' curiosity, helping them discover and find their passion.
