Middle School Math Department: G6 “Theme Park Tycoon” Math Project

January 11, 2021

Last month, the students in sixth grade completed a fun math project about managing a theme park. Students were required to think from the manager’s perspective and consider the park’s profit, maintenance costs, future investments, etc. In addition to strengthening their pre-algebra skills, students further connected their math study to the real world. They did this by conducting independent research for examples and data, culminating in the creation of their own unique brochure that introduced a new roller coaster. In order to complete the assignment, students had to use both their math skills and imagination since the project involved artistic creation as well as the implementation of algebra procedures. The reflection page also enabled students to keep track of their progress, review their process after finishing all the tasks, and think more deeply about the overall quality of their work. The goal was for students to notice which sections they excelled in and which ones they need to improve on in the future.

Through this project, students not only experienced how creative and applicable math can be, but they also strengthened their pre-algebra skills. We were impressed by their effort and creativity, and we hope the project allowed them to make meaningful connections to the world around them. We can’t wait to see what else they imagine and create in the future!
