High School Biology Department: IB Class Debate

January 3, 2021

IB Biology requires students to understand and explore the social impact and promotion of science and technology. Therefore, analysis of the advantage and potential risk of a new technique is one of the important areas which the IB science course focuses on. On December 30, 2020, the IB Biology class of Grade 11 held a special debate on the topic of "Commercial Promotion of Genetically-Modified Crops". In the debate, debaters on both sides had outstanding performances. The pro side elaborated on major issues which were solved by genetically-modified crops and explained the necessity of promoting transgenic technology. The con side, on the other hand, emphasized disadvantages brought by the commercialization of genetically-modified crops from the perspective of economics. Relating their statement to biology, the con-side debaters also analyzed the safety of genetically-modified crops as food and their potential harm on the environment. Focusing on the topic, the students quoted from a wide range of academic resources and fought intensely with their words during the debate, bringing bursts of applause and laughter to the classroom. The wonderful speeches of the debaters showed their thorough preparation and quick thinking.

After the debate, the teacher-judges voted for the winning team and the best debater and made insightful comments. Through this debate, the students trained their ability to interpret academic materials and analyze problems. They also now have a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the advantages and potential risks brought by the commercial promotion of genetically-modified crops.
