Grade 12: Graphic Design and Illustration Experience Sharing

December 11, 2020

Assembly started in the morning of December 4th, with students Emily from 12(3) and Alicia from 12(8) sharing their experience. The topic of the day’s speech was to compare and contrast between graphic design and illustration.

Emily began the presentation by talking about her experience in graphic design in school activities. She explained that participating in the design department of the Yearbook Club was her biggest part regarding school activities that she started 3 years ago and progressed to a leadership position this year. She explained that graphic design involves Photoshop to create designs. Despite her experience, she said that it is not her biggest passion. The reason behind this is that it is actually very difficult to get the best composition graphic design, and the process is often very stressful to her.

Moving on to the next topic, Emily introduced her experience in illustration in her junior project. She was in charge of the illustration part of publishing the storybook. Emily and Alicia had to draw 40 different pieces of illustration to complete the project. One key difference is that illustration is 100% hand drawn, so there are less restrictions in design. For this reason, Emily shared that she enjoys illustration better and it is likely to be her future career.

This sharing session gave the students more information about a career in graphic design and illustration.
