SHSID High School Student Debuts in "Young Edison" Season Eight - "World of Tomorrow"

March 22, 2024

Recently, in the eighth season of "Tomorrow's World" on Shanghai TV Channel, SHSID high school student Eugene faced a series of questions from the judges and with his responses, distinguished himself from the others. His scientific and creative inventions, along with his personal growth story, were partially showcased during the program. Three additional episodes featuring Eugene are scheduled to air. Let's continue to stay tuned to the captivating performances of young people worldwide, including Eugene, and the thought-provoking sparks they ignite.

Throughout his high school years, Eugene has been actively involved in environmental science outreach, establishing the "Green Earth" club to promote environmental awareness through educational articles. Through careful observation of daily life, he drew inspiration from a mere drop of air conditioner condensate, leading to the successful design of an energy-saving device utilizing condensate mist technology for air conditioners. He then diligently pursued the path to transform this innovative design into a tangible product. It was this remarkably creative invention, tailored to the cognitive abilities of high school students, that earned him first place in the Energy Sustainability Materials and Design category at the 74th International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), along with the prestigious Peggy Scripps Award, one of the highest honors in the competition.

At SHSID, aspiring young talents like Eugene, who cultivate scientific aspirations and consistently demonstrate excellence, are rapidly emerging. In 2024, our school has once again achieved a series of positive outcomes:

A student with exceptional talent in informatics has been successfully chosen to join the training camp for the top 30 contestants in the Canadian Computing Olympiad (CCO), embarking on the selection journey for the Canadian team for the International Olympiad in Informatics at the end of May.  Another student has secured a position on the roster for the top 10 contestants in the Chilean National Informatics Olympiad (Nacional de la Olimpiada Chilena de Informática), courtesy of his outstanding performance.

Furthermore, a student represented SHSID at the XXV Exporecerca Jove, the International Youth Science Fair in Spain and excelled in the fierce international competition, achieving an impressive third place in the international category.

Meanwhile, in the 39th Shanghai Adolescents Science and Technology Innovation Contest, four groups of high school students from SHSID successfully advanced to the final evaluation stage. They achieved remarkable results, with three groups winning first prizes, five groups winning second prizes, five groups winning third prizes, and eight special awards.

Even more excitingly, four groups of students will represent SHSID as they travel to Los Angeles, USA, to participate in the upcoming 75th ISEF Grand Finals in May, where they will compete against talented individuals from around the world.

Additionally, another student has successfully advanced to the semifinals of the United States Biology Olympiad, placing among the top 10% nationwide. Recently, the school was delighted to learn that an alumnus, specializing in mathematics and quantum physics, successfully received a teaching position invitation from the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center of Tsinghua University.

We firmly believe that within the intellectually rich, trusting, and supportive environment of our school, in the days ahead, students at SHSID will continue to harbor a profound curiosity for the unknown. They will also continue to write more brilliant chapters, constantly achieving the dream of using technology to make the world a better place.
