2024 Oxford GlobalMUN - SHSID Model United Nations Conference Successfully Held at SHSID

April 9, 2024

From April 4th to 6th, the SHSID campus witnessed a remarkable gathering of over 250 students, all converging to participate in the Oxford GlobalMUN-SHSID Model United Nations Conference 2024 (OxMUN). Since 2018, Shanghai High School International Division has proudly served as the co-host of this esteemed event, fostering a platform for international dialogue and learning. This year's conference provided an immersive experience for all participants, allowing them to delve deeply into the intricacies of international affairs and diplomacy.

On the afternoon of April 4th, following a four-year hiatus, Oxford-SHSID MUN started with an inspiring opening ceremony. Hosted by Zane and Sophia from SHSID Class of 2025, the Under Secretary-Generals for the conference, the ceremony began with a warm welcome from SHSID High School Principal, Mr. Ma Feng, who greeted all delegates and commended the collective efforts that brought the conference to fruition. Secretary-General Joana Perrone and Director-General Madeline Ridout from Oxford Global, then addressed the delegates, outlining their expectations for the conference. Lastly, Student Secretary-General Ethan (SHSID Class of 2024) delivered insightful remarks on the importance of diplomacy and professionalism in MUN proceedings. To signify the official start of the conference, Mr. Ma, Ms. Perrone, and etc, then came up to strike the gavel, announcing the start of the conference.

In 3 days of committee sessions, delegates from all around China were able to explore the complete MUN experience at SHSID. OxMUN’s seven unique committees discussed a wide range of topics, testing the capabilities of delegates in dealing with contemporary world issues as in the real United Nations. Delegates all worked diligently, debating, discussing, and writing solutions for numerous contentious topics. Through intense debate, engaging moderated caucuses, and shows of diplomacy, the delegates thrived in committee sessions. They were able to learn so much from the chairs that traveled from Oxford to organize this activity. From this experience, a true sense of being a global citizen has been cultivated, and leaving the conference, delegates are more inclined to take initiative for the world issues that are going on to create a more sustainable, peaceful, and globalized world.

The Executives of this year’s conference came from the SHSID International Affairs Association (IAA) Club. Founded in 2008, the IAA Club stands as one of the most prestigious clubs at the school, with over 80 active members per year. For 15 years, the IAA has worked to train delegates for both national and international MUN conferences, cultivating students’ research, speech, and writing capabilities in weekly after-school sessions. Before the Oxford conference began, the school and members of the IAA Club worked hard, and actively communicated with the Oxford team to ensure that the conference would run smoothly. It was their great efforts that ensured the success of the conference. In total, the IAA won a total of 5 Best Delegate Awards, 8 Outstanding Delegate Awards, 4 Honorable Mentions, and 3 Best Positions Paper Awards. Also, the IAA, representing SHSID, won the Best Delegation Award for the group’s holistic accomplishments. The awards IAA delegates received are a reflection of the hard work they put into the conference and the quality of training provided to them by the club.

OxMUN at SHSID gave all delegates a unique opportunity to explore international relations from multiple viewpoints, serving as not only an excellent learning experience but also a source of lasting memories and friendships.
