PD Day Ignites New Sparks in Education: Fostering Harmonious Teacher-Student Relationships and Competency-Based Education

April 22, 2024

Deeply rooted in the rich tradition of educational innovation at SHSID High School, Teacher Professional Development Day holds a pivotal position. As a vital platform for teachers' educational and instructional pursuits, it consistently introduces fresh teaching perspectives and strategies. On April 19, the high school once again hosted a productive and enriching PD event.

That morning, a psychological lecture captivated the attention of both Chinese and foreign teachers. Centered on the theme of "Building Collaborative Relationships with Your Teen Students," the lecture was conducted by a seasoned psychological expert. By seamlessly integrating principles of pedagogy and psychology, the expert delved into the nuances of cultivating healthy and effective teacher-student relationships with junior and senior high school students. Through engaging case studies and interactive sessions, teachers gained profound insights into the significance of establishing clear boundaries in teacher-student relationships and how to jointly foster a harmonious and conciliatory educational atmosphere through meaningful communication and a deep understanding of students' psychological needs.

After the lecture, various subject groups embarked on intensive teaching and research activities. Teachers initiated their deliberations with the design of learning journeys, engaging in animated discussions regarding the essence and breadth of subject core competencies. The science subjects group zeroed in on scientific spirit, attitude, and values; the mathematics group went beyond logic and computation, emphasizing problem-solving and data analysis; while the liberal arts group, grounded in fundamental reading comprehension, delved into fostering critical thinking and a global perspective in diverse forms. This exploration aimed to enhance students' comprehension of viewpoint diversity and social issues' complexity. Everyone shared their valuable experiences and insights from teaching practice, discussing strategies to seamlessly integrate core competencies into teaching through spiral-like content and objectives across different grades. This approach aims to provide students with more comprehensive support to holistically enhance their overall quality and learning abilities.

As they delved into learning journeys, teachers from the biology and physics groups converged to strategize for the impending interdisciplinary subject activity week, "The Resonance of Physics and Biology." Through a diverse array of formats, including lectures, project exhibitions, and club activities, students will immerse themselves in the unique allure of interdisciplinary intersections.

The PD events not only served as an invaluable forum for teachers to engage in mutual learning and exchange but also sparked their enthusiasm for delving into innovative educational avenues. Throughout these events, teachers not only amassed a wealth of educational and teaching experiences but also profoundly experienced the immense power of collaboration.

As we gaze into the future, with the relentless advancement of education, SHSID high school remains committed to exploring educational and teaching methodologies that align with the demands of the era. We strive to consistently enhance the educational and teaching capabilities of our teachers, laying a solid foundation for the holistic development of our students. With the concerted efforts of all teachers, the educational and teaching endeavors of SHSID are destined to embrace an even more resplendent future.
