High School Biology Department: SHSID Students Won Awards at the 2024 Brain Bee National Round

April 22, 2024

Three students from the MYELIN club of SHSID won the third prize in the national competition of 2024 Brain Bee Activity.

The MYELIN club at SHSID provides a platform for students to focus on their aspirations. Every Thursday after school, the club gathers members interested in neurobiology, provides them with relevant knowledge material, and allows them to speak freely on the topic of neuroscience. Led by student leader Anna Shi and Ms. Tan, these workshops ignite the interest and passion of students from one year to the next in neurobiology, and lay the groundwork for their academic pursuits, professional applications, and career aspirations in the field of neuroscience.

Since its establishment, the MYELIN club has created activities that are not only limited to weekly knowledge sharing and discussions, but also dedicated to organizing a variety of both on- and off-campus programs to enrich the after-school life and broaden the horizons of students, such as lectures, visits to institutes, and so on. The MYELIN club has invited several guest speakers, including Brian Bee founder Prof. Norbert Myslinski, and Prof. Weng of the Brain Institute of Fudan University, to give lectures, each of which has attracted many students. By interacting with professors, students gain a deeper understanding of cutting-edge advances in neurobiology and the fascinating world behind the workings of the brain. On March 31st, 2024, MYELIN members visited the Center for Biological and Chemical Cross Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CBCR), led by Prof. He, to learn more about the research on "Neural Function Regulation and Early Pathogenesis of Neurodegenerative Diseases". The club also encourages students to actively participate in research projects. Members have already begun writing literature reviews on neurological disorders, as well as joining in on science projects exploring their correlation with environmental factors.

The MYELIN club is a vibrant collective that attracts students with a passion for neurobiology to come together to spark academic ideas, build long-lasting friendships, and set goals for joint endeavors. As the club grows, students continue to cultivate intellectual curiosity and academic achievement, as well as prove themselves through activities such as Brain Bee, a multi-dimensional enhancement in the field of brain science, and a solid foundation for their future majors.
