Primary and Middle School English Department: Authors Week--Dr. Seuss and Roald Dahl

March 28, 2019

During this week, we celebrated two of our favorite authors! 1st and 2nd graders followed in the footsteps of Dr. Seuss, while 3rd and 4th graders immersed themselves in the stories of Roald Dahl. Teachers and students had different themes for each day of the week, as well as a ton of engaging activities. Let’s hear from some of our teachers about this exciting week!

1st Grade: Ms. Candice

“During Dr. Seuss week we had many exciting activities in first grade. We made Cat in the Hat, Fox in Socks puppets, and Thing 1 and Thing 2. In science class, to go along with changing states of matter, we made Oobleck (from Bartholomew and the Oobleck). We also tried our best to say tongue twisters like many of Dr. Seuss’ characters.”

2nd Grade: Ms. Kelsey

“Grade 2 had a very exciting week celebrating Dr. Seuss. The students had a wonderful time dressing up in wacky socks, a twisted style, mad hats, twins, and pajamas. Throughout the week, we read stories, watched movies, and played Dr. Seuss themed games and activities. On Wednesday, the students spent all afternoon playing The Cat in the Hat relay races, Sneetches themed musical chairs, The Grinchmas Games, Green Eggs and Ham Egg Toss, and Oh the Places You’ll Go from the Ball Dodgeball.”

3rd Grade: Miss Forman

“We celebrated Roald Dahl this week. We had a variety of engaging activities, including Matilda Monday, where the students and teachers wore ribbons in their hair or a hat on their head, Favorite Roald Dahl Character on Tuesday, where kids were dressed up as characters from various books, including Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The BFG. An activity the kids really enjoyed was our candy factory rotation. The students had golden tickets for each classroom. When they entered each classroom, there was a quote on the board, along with the book it was from. The students would then copy the quote and get a different kind of candy from each room. We love celebrating Roald Dahl week!”

Grade 4: Ms. Bunn

“Some of the highlights of this week included a visit to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Students had the opportunity to choose two themed rooms to visit. Some molded their own chocolate and some had the opportunity to experiment with a green screen. On Thursday, both third and fourth graders were lucky enough to see a short performance from Matilda the musical performed by our very own students. They then participated in a Roald Dahl Game Show.”
