Congratulations: 12th Grade Students Publish Paper

April 1, 2019

Recently, four 12th grade students at our school, Ashley Huang, Justina Jin, Noah Jiang, and Audney Guo, received the February 2019 issue of the journal "数学教学", which marked the successful completion of the paper publishing process that took place over the past two years.

In May 2017, the four students won the Outstanding award in the 3rd International Mathematical Modeling Challenge – Greater China Regional Round. They were invited to make a plenary speech on the Summit held at Hong Kong University in July of that year. The award-winning paper was recommended to the journal “数学教学” at the same time. "数学教学" is an academic journal on mathematics and is sponsored by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and hosted by East China Normal University. It focuses on the teaching of specific topics, textbook-based-teaching method research, domestic and foreign educational reforms, book evaluation, modern mathematics knowledge and lectures, extracurricular activities, etc. The authors are mostly first-line secondary school mathematical educators and researchers from universities. It is rare to publish high school students' mathematical modeling papers in these magazines, so the four students really appreciated this opportunity and submitted the papers to the press after slight modification.

On May 24, 2018, after a review period of more than half a year, the summited paper was finally accepted by the publishing press. The students were full of joy, but there came the unexpected revisions of the manuscript. Due to length limitations, wordcount, and the validity of the model, the four students humbly accepted the editor's suggestions for revision and realized some deficiencies in the original model. They tried their best to perfect the model and even completely changed the main idea of the model. After the revisions of six drafts, the paper was finally published in the February 2019 issue.

Because the problem of "Measuring the Earth by Satellite Remote Sensing Technology" involves much professional knowledge, the models established by the four students were inevitably idealistic and impractical initially. However, after the modification and submission process during the past two years, they realized the rigorous attitude and the spirit of excellence that academic researchers should have. We believe this process will help them study and research in the future.
