Grade 11: Shanghai Botanical Garden Volunteer Training Session

April 3, 2019

During the afternoon of April 2nd, Director Liu and many high school volunteers went to Shanghai Botanical Garden to obtain information regarding how to become a qualified guide in the upcoming Shanghai International Flower Show. From 4 pm to 5 pm, the students walked through the museum in the Bonsai section and received a brief introduction to what they would be telling the visitors. The students’ main goal was to communicate information on Bonsai to the visitors of the museum and to translate these concepts from Chinese to English if foreigner visitors are present.

Throughout the introduction, the staff showed students and teachers the tools and types of equipment used in stylizing Bonsai. They further talked about the history of Bonsai and elaborated on the different features that each Bonsai sect has. This project aims to not only provide the Shanghai Botanical Garden with student volunteers, but also provide the students with new skills in collaboration and communication. Both students and teachers are grateful for this opportunity given to them and wish to show the beauty of the garden as well as the excellency of SHSID through this activity.
