In the era of Big Data and the “Internet of Everything”, mathematics has become an essential tool through the combination of modeling and computation. Mathematical modeling is an important part of STEM education in schools and universities. Modeling competencies are key aspects of innovation competence and skills. The purpose of the IMMC is to promote the teaching of mathematical modeling and its applications at all educational levels for all students. It is based on the firm belief that students and teachers need to experience the power of mathematics to help better understand, analyze, and solve real world problems outside of mathematics and to do so in realistic contexts.

In the 2019 IMMC, 25 teams out of more than 580 registered teams were selected as finalists and will move on to the Final Presentation Competitions for the Regional Round. 3 SHSID teams qualified to participate in the competition. One excellent team (8-1 Lucas Wu8-2 Ivan Yuan8-7 Eric He8-9 Jonathan Zou) stood out from the rest and will go to Hong Kong for the Final Presentation Competitions.

As Einstein said, "In the years of anxious exploration in darkness, there is a strong desire, alternating confidence and fatigue, and eventually a light that only those who have experienced can understand" (Einstein, 1934,'Notes on the Origin of the General Theory of Relativity'). The persistent efforts of these distinguished students and their mentors have enabled them to reach new mathematical heights, proving that resiliency is the key to academic success.

Congratulations to the students. We wish them luck and hope for brilliant results in the Final Presentation Competition!
