Puxi Grade 3 :Poetry Slam

May 20, 2019

This year, third grade participated in a new and exciting event in the SHSID primary school! Every student took part in a schoolwide poetry slam. Our competition focused on the traditional Japanese poetry form, Haiku. In class, students learned the structure and purpose of these simple, yet limitless poems. In addition to learning the makeup of a Haiku, we focused on fluency and pronunciation.

After students created their own poems, each class held their own poetry slam. During this slam, every student presented their poem and one lucky student was chosen to represent each class in the final competition. In week 14, the six students from the six different classes took part in the final round of our poetry slam! Students prepared a presentation for their poem and recited it from memory. We had special guest judges that consisted of a third, fourth, and fifth grade teacher, as well as a fifth-grade student to make the final decision for our grade three poetry slam winner.

We had a wonderful time writing and hearing so many amazing poems! Students are looking forward to the poetry slam next year.
