May 30, 2019

The Dragon Boat Festival is right around the corner. To celebrate this traditional Chinese festival, students from Pudong campus had a special personal growth class this Tuesday.

Firstgetting a better understanding about the legend of this festival is necessary for students who come from different nationalities. With a history of more than 2,000 years, there are many legends about the Dragon Boat Festival. The most popular one is in commemoration of Qu Yuan, who was minister of the State of Chu and one of China's earliest poets. Some of the upper primary students already knew him because of his famous poems.

Lower grade students were more captivated by the customs of Dragon Boat Festival. Eating Zongzi might be the most popular among all of them, and many of the students had tried it before. Additionally, having a dragon boat race is a traditional way to celebrate the festival, but kids living in cities rarely have the chance to experience this. Some of the old customs are not popular anymore, but people still love to hang calamus and moxa on their front doors to ward off evil.

After learning so much about the Dragon Boat Festival, students had a quiz show. They were all surprised by how much they learned about this festival in this short period of time.

Last, but not least, students made handcrafted wooden Zongzi together. Using their imagination, a lot of unique and cute Zongzi were created. It was definitely a great celebration for the Dragon Boat Festival.
