High School Physic Department: Open Class - “Atomic Models”

January 4, 2022

On the morning of December 31, Ms. Wu Wenqian had an open class on "atomic models" in Room 212 of Yifu Building. The "Atomic model" is the common area of physics and chemistry which attracted many teachers from the Physics and Chemistry departments to watch and learn.

The teaching objective of this class is to explore scientific methods against the background of the development of the atomic model. First of all, the students played dice in groups. In the process of observation, thinking, and reasoning, they experienced the essence of the scientific method. Then, the conduction of three experiments pushed this class to its climax. The three experiments were a Cathode-ray tube experiment, Alpha particle scattering simulation experiment, and rare gas discharge experiment. Students inferred the atomic model by observing the experimental phenomena. The three experiments were progressive layer by layer, reflecting the values of the scientific value on development in looking at and analyzing problems.

This class was rich in content and diverse in teaching methods. The teachers who attended the class spoke highly of it. In the end, Mr. Sun Hao, head of the Chemistry department, gave professional comments and put forward valuable suggestions from the perspective of chemistry teaching.
