Turn back the Clock:Review of the Sports Week

SHSID held a Sports Week instead of a sports meet this semester. From October 8th to 13th, students from Grades 1-12 took part in all kinds of competitions and activities in different theme days, with the Sports Meet as the climax for sure. If you can turn back the clock and roam the campus during the Sports Week, you will also be amazed by the beauty of doing sports.

Highlight 1: Sports Everyday

From October 8th, our campus had been immersed in the atmosphere of doing sports. During this one week, the school organized all kinds of activities to let students feel the happiness of doing sports and experience sportsmanship.

—Turn back the clock:

1. For Grades 9-12: Each day of the Sports Week had a different subject such as Stallions (Sat.), Black Friday (Sun.), Twin Day (Mon.), Sports Day (Tues.), Sunglasses (Wed.), and the last day (Thurs.) was the day for the Sports Meet. From Monday to Wednesday, students from Grades 9 to 12 entered a dodgeball tournament. From October 9th to 11th, 11th and 12th graders fervently participated in the dodgeball competition during lunchtime. Although there was time limit of only about 8 minutes, it did not hinder the players from showing their passion. For the competition, there were 21 teams in total with 10 players each, and they had to win 2 or 3 times to get to the final, except for one lucky team, 12(6). After going through many well-matched games, 11(6) and 11(9) got to the final. Against all odds, however, 11(9) defeated 11(6), who had won the formal champion in the previous game, and became the new champion of the dodgeball competition. Overall, this annual competition conveyed to players the importance of teamwork that their cooperation is the most important factor to win the game.

2. As for primary school students: To respond to the call of school about doing more sports, Puxi 3rd graders played Egg Toss Relay during P.E. class on October 11th. Students should use a spoon and a fake egg during the race. During the relay race, students need to make sure their egg is in the spoon rather than on the ground, and they also need to walk or run as fast as they can. All the students were very concentrated on the race, and they were also willing to encourage their peers during the race. Teachers want all the students to learn good teamwork spirit from this interesting relay race and hope they can enjoy doing sports all the time!

Highlight 2: Opening Ceremony

Shanghai High School International Division’s sports meets are known for their grand opening events. Each year, the teachers come up with exciting sports or themes for each class to perform in front of other students.

Starting off with performances from the 7th grade, everyone clad in blue, the students feasted their eyes on the sports. Then, moving on to the 8th grade, with everyone clad in black, amazing tricks and sports were presented in various styles. There was even one boy dressed as Captain America! Sadly, the performances by the 7th and 8th grades students had to come to an end with the students lining up along the grass lawn. After that, skillful cheer leaders from the lower and higher grades gave spectacular performances, showcasing their acrobatic, gymnastic, and dancing skills. There were flips, jumps, leaps, and aerial stunts that people were blown away by. Directly following the cheerleaders, Mr. Ni, Director of Grades 7-8 and Mr. Liu Lian, Middle School and Primary School Principal officially announced the commencement of our Sports Meet with great speeches.

Afterwards, the 1st exciting event which was tug of war took place at the front of stage. There were about 30 students on each side of the long rope who were trying to pull the rope to their sides, and they all wanted to win for their team.

Then, the big feet competition was held next. After pre-selection, 4 teams got into the final competition. They stepped out of the line as soon as the judge whistled. Each team leader shouted loudly “1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2…” in order to keep the team members moving in a line.

Afterwards, track and field events began. There were 100-meter, 400-meter, 800-meter, and 4x100-meter races. The athletes ran extremely fast. At the auditorium, the students were excited and cheered for their friends who participated in the competitions.

Great time always flies quickly, and soon the Director declared that the Sports Meet was over.

3. If we go to see the performance of Grades 7-9: The sports contain 100-meter race, 400-meter race, 800-meter race, 4x100-meter relay, shot throwing, long jump, high jump, and 3-legged race. These events require different skills from students, for example, your balancing skills should be outstanding in order to do well in 3-legged race. Students have nearly 3 hours to compete with each other on sports. They can win medals on each activity if they get a good ranking in the events. An overall buzz of enthusiasm pervaded throughout much of the Sports Meet, particularly among the participants, who struggled and strived to win. The final competition, the relay of teachers and 8th grade boys, especially stirred up the crowd, with a teachers’ group winning the race and generating a roar of approval.
