Middle School Physics Department: Semester Overview

June 28, 2021

This school year is coming to an end. Students from 8th grade have learned how to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the world around them in this school year, apply the physical laws to life, explain phenomena in life using physical knowledge, and analyze the causes of various problems using physical knowledge to find out methods to solve problems.

While studying the Metric System, students learned the basic units, commonly used in physics, and the Metric Unit and Customary Unit, commonly used globally. To strengthen students’ understanding of Measurement, grade 8 completed measuring the Zhentao Building, which helped students quantitatively understand the world.

Through the study of mechanics, students observed and explained the relationship between force and motion and the changing from PE to KE and back while riding on a roller coaster. They explored the relationship of mechanical advantage by observing pulleys, levers, and ramps and the effect each has on the force needed to move an object. To strengthen students’ understanding and application of energy conversion and simple machines, grade 8 students carried out a catapults competition.

Through their study on light and waves, students learned the basic properties of sound waves and light waves, the concepts of reflection and refraction of light, as well as the interference behavior of light and the electromagnetic spectrum. With this knowledge, students can better understand light-particle dual properties and be better prepared for grade 9 physics.

Grade 8 physics covers vital information that helps students understand complex topics and helps the students in effective preparation for grade 9 study.
