Middle School Math Department: G6 Math Project “The Little Artists”

June 7, 2021

During the past month, sixth graders participated in a unique comprehensive project challenging them to create their tessellation or optical illusions. This assignment was different from past projects in that it combined class content with artistic expression. The project is divided into two main themes: one about tessellation and the other about optical illusions. Students followed their teacher’s instruction and learned from relevant videos to complete their simple tessellation work in class. Afterward, examples of simple and complex optical illusions were provided by teachers so that students could explore known works before creating their own. After class, students were asked to pick one of these themes to create their artwork.

Inspired by these art pieces, students used their imagination to create a lot of fascinating work. This project not only broadened students’ mathematical knowledge but also integrated interdisciplinary learning by incorporating spatial awareness and creativity. All students successfully investigated interesting mathematical relationships in this project, and we are so proud of their ingenious work!
