May 28, 2021

Bird-watching, the practice of observing wild birds in their natural habitats, has become a prevailing activity among urban Shanghai. On May 22, four students from the SHSID birding community participated in the “Lingang Bird-watching Competition” that took place in Nanhui Wetland in Shanghai. During the competition, each team makes effort recording different bird species in given time, and the team with the most species collected would be the winner.

The competition attracted many experienced birders, locally and overseas; nevertheless, the SHSID team still managed to achieve 1st Prize with their outstanding performance of observing 77 bird species in 7 hours. Some of the "highlight" birds they saw included local rarities such as the Black-capped Kingfisher and Tiger Shrike, as well as nationally protected species such as Black-faced Spoonbills.
