Middle and Primary School Section: Educators for the Future—The 6th SHSID Outstanding Young Teachers Contest

May 24, 2021

There was great excitement at the SHS campus on the morning of May 22nd. Teachers of SHSID gathered for a long-awaited event—The 6th SHSID Outstanding Young Teachers Contest.

The Middle and Primary School group preliminary round took place at the Zhentao Building. Unlike the usual stances the student would see from their teachers in a regular classroom setting, their teachers transformed into passionate competitors today.

The contest started right at 8:00 a.m. All competitors need to finish two events—the Lesson Plan Design and Impromptu English Speech. For the previous event, firstly, participants are given 40 minutes to design a lesson plan based on the specified materials. Then, they need to explain how they will demonstrate the lesson for 15 minutes and respond to the jury’s questions. Impromptu English speaking is an assessment of teachers’ English language skills. Participants have 20 minutes to brainstorm their ideas based on the question given, outline the speech, and finally, deliver a 3-minute speech without notecards. Impressed but not surprised, the judges were very satisfied with participants’ creative lesson plans, professional teaching skills, and fluent English. Among the participants, some were first-year teachers who just left campus and joined SHSID; the others were young, experienced teachers who have gained more confidence and become idols of students over the past few years teaching in SHSID.

Apart from evaluating teaching skills, there is also an event for young teachers featuring their talents in a diverse range of areas outside of the teaching spectrum by video clips. We are not only able to immerse ourselves in instrumental music, vocal music, dance, painting, and the calligraphy presented in the videos, but also find out that the teachers took an interest and did a splendid job in coding, bodybuilding, cooking, sewing, etc. There also were several videos by teachers who are masters of multiple skills. If posted on TikTok, these videos would definitely go viral! We cannot wait to see the outstanding performances of the teachers who advance to the upcoming final.

Chairman Mao Zedong once inspired young people: the world is yours, as well as ours, but in the last analysis, it is yours. Young teachers of SHSID, we are so sure that you are the ones who will best contribute to the bright future of education.
