Grade 8: A Meaningful Lecture at Science Fair

May 21, 2021

During the afternoon YD class of May 20th, 8th graders gathered in the primary section auditorium. The school had invited Professor Yuan to give a lecture on the mechanisms of cell death. Professor Yuan is the Director of Interdisciplinary Research Center on Biology and Chemistry, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, the Chinese Academy of Sciences. She received her Ph.D. at both Harvard and Fudan University. She is a pioneer and leader in studying cell death and has made many contributions and discoveries in this realm.

During the lecture, students learned about how cells can be murdered. In addition, the students also learned about the private lives of scientists. Professor Yuan has the same personal life as everyone, such as partying with friends and going out to play. At last, Professor Yuan also introduced a summer camp. For the students who want to learn more about cells, this opportunity looks very engaging.

At the end of the speech, the students also interacted with Professor Yuan and asked some meaningful questions. Overall, the lecture aroused students’ interest in biology, and everyone gained more knowledge of the workings of cells.

One of the students said, “This lecture was meaningful and great. Although there are some things I have learned in the sixth-grade biology class, I still learned a lot of knowledge.”
