Middle School Biology Department: 8th Graders Dissect Squids

April 12, 2021

Students learned all about animals in life science this semester. To have a better understanding on the anatomy of different animals, the biology teachers arranged a series of dissections on animals such as the squid, razor clam, crayfish, crucian carp, bullfrog, etc. On April 6th, students went to the lab room to dissect a squid and observe its unique body structures like the ink sac and siphon. The dissections were guided by the science teachers, with the lab report providing more exact steps. They used dissection scissors to cut open the squid and observed many body parts such as the beak, ink sac, gills, brain, and inner shell. Many students discovered a long piece of cartilage that felt like a piece of plastic! Students also learned to distinguish between male and female squids. This dissection allowed students to understand better the various inner structures of real squids. As always, the students are eagerly awaiting the next dissection.
