Middle School Section: SSIMUN

November 22, 2022

The SSIMUN competition finally came on November 19, 2022. The conference lasted two days, including a beginner’s conference for new delegates and a standard conference for experienced students. Eight international schools attended this competition, which allowed 68 students representing 68 countries to sit in the auditorium of SSIS. It was such a blessing for any enthusiastic attendee to have an in-person conference.

On the first day, half of the delegates arrived at the Beginner’s conference to learn and have a go at proposing and presenting resolutions to 3 global issues, including supporting displaced peoples, safeguarding against new hybrid warfare types, and implementing new educational frameworks to support the next generation of global learners. SHSID students stepped out of their comfort zones and cooperated with other schools assisting their blocs in carrying out the final debate on resolutions for these specific problems. Participants became more active as the day went on, as they began to show all the techniques and information that were taught by the wonderful student coaches and lovely teachers in SHSID MUN. Students took an active role in writing amendments, debating, and presenting quality speeches.

The next day, students attended the standard conference, where they jumped right into making speeches about and debating complex world issues. Delegates from schools all over Shanghai showed up ready to debate. The competition was fierce, and students worked hard both with and against delegates from their own school and others. At the end of the day, 3 resolutions were passed, and progress on the global stage was made.

Overall, students of SHSID had so much fun in this experience and it could be one of the most memorable conferences. It was the first in-person conference for many of them. All delegates have learned more and gained knowledge on some practical details of an actual conference. With the closing ceremony ending, attendees parted ways, arriving home with better skills and a further understanding of MUN. All in all, everybody did a great job, and all delegates are looking forward to the next conference ahead.
