10th Grade 2011 2nd Semester News Summary

Out of the twelve grades in SHSID, the 10thgraders are the sophomores in the High School Division, which is a crucial year in their lives. During 10thgrade, students must choose their IB, AP or standard school courses carefully in accordance with their future plans. Our faculty considers their skill development to be our top priority.

Under Director Chen’s guidance and Grade Director Ms. Liu’s careful arrangement, we have organized a series of visits to various corporations. With the help of many parents and student volunteers, we have organized trips on Friday afternoons to companies such as Dow Chemical, General Electric, Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chongyang Investment, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. Students wrote feedback reports afterwards and shared their experiences with other peers as well as corporate executives from the respective companies too.

We found these visits to be very productive. Every time about 25 students attended the trip, finally around 150 students participated in the activity, which exceeds half of all students in grade 10. Many volunteers said that it was a “refreshing and interesting experience”. We hope that it is able to inspire them and broaden their knowledge base, since they are able to volunteer to visit any company that interests them. We also published photos and reports from these visits on the second floor of the ZhongXing Building for other students to appreciate, hoping that other students could enjoy the experience vicariously. Now there are about 20 excellent reports being posted there.

Hopefully these visits have offered a new range of opportunities for these students. We aspire to provide our students with more extracurricular, interesting experiences outside of the school campus that are more tangible to society.

Indeed there were a few small mishaps with these events, but we believe through continued exploration and development this will become a regular habit for future 10thgraders and a meaningful program for SHSID!
