SHSID Children's Choir Won the First Prize at the 8th National Student Art Exhibition and Performance, Xuhui District Choir Competition

October 16, 2024

Recently, the 8th National Student Art Exhibition and Performance, Xuhui District Choir Competition, organized by the Xuhui District Education Bureau and hosted by the Xuhui District Youth Activity Center, was successfully held. Over 3,500 students from 83 primary and secondary schools across the district gathered to present their songs as a tribute to the motherland, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

At the primary school choir showcase held on September 26th, the Children's Choir of our school's International Division performed the English piece Under Winter Moon and the Yunnan folk song The Sun Has Risen. Among nearly 50 participating primary school teams, our choir stood out and won the first prize, demonstrating the artistic talent and vibrant spirit of Shanghai High School students.

The success of the Children's Choir is linked to the strong support of our school, each of the grade levels, the Music Department teaching and research team as well parents’ active cooperation. Most importantly, it is thanks to the rigorous daily rehearsals and the resultant team cohesion built through the hard work exhibited during these extra training sessions. It is worth noting here that the four-part piece “The Sun is Rising,” adapted from a Yi ethnic folk song, presented a high level of difficulty for our SHSID Children’s Choir; this was, after all, the first time students from the international division were exposed to a piece of choral music from a Chinese ethnic minority. They went from unfamiliarity to a successful performance, improving not only their vocal skills and artistic literacy but also deepening their understanding of China's extraordinary traditional folk culture. This was both a bold and successful endeavor.

As we look ahead into the future, we know that the Children's Choir will always strive forward!
