Grade 11 IB Extended Essay Introduction Session Held
On the afternoon of December 18, all IB students gathered in the theater of Zhongxing Building for a session on the Extended Essay (EE).
The homeroom teacher for the 11th grade, Mr. Sun Hao, hosted the entire information session. First, Dr. Jiang Hao, the IB coordinator, explained to the students what the Extended Essay (EE) is. Dr. Jiang emphasized the importance of the EE, stating that it is one of the core components of the IB program. Through the EE, students will apply the knowledge they have learned in the classroom to complete independent research under the guidance of their EE supervisors. For every IB student, this will be a unique and challenging academic research journey. Next, Mr. Sun briefly introduced the basic requirements of the Extended Essay, including its structure, word count, evaluation criteria, and the timelines for each writing phase.
The session also invited four IB subject teachers, each representing different subject groups, to introduce the specific requirements of the Extended Essay in their disciplines. Mr. Haig and Mr. Johns, representing group 1 and group 2, introduced the requirements for the Extended Essay in language subjects, using English as an example. They highlighted the challenges of writing the Extended Essay in this field, emphasizing that students choosing language or literature courses for their EE must have a strong ability to analyze literary works. They also pointed out the format and structural guidelines students must follow during the writing process.
Next, Ms. Sloan, an IB psychology teacher, took the stage to introduce the Extended Essay for social science subjects. Ms. Sloan first explained the methods and steps for selecting a suitable topic. As an experienced EE supervisor, she also discussed how, over the two years of the EE course, supervisors would guide students through their research and provide necessary advice and support.
Finally, Ms. Hu introduced the Extended Essay for science subjects, with biology as a representative example. Ms. Hu provided an in-depth analysis of the differences between the Extended Essay and internal assessments, and further explained the EE requirements. She guided students on how to focus their research topic, effectively conduct their research, and adhere to the required writing standards.
Through this information session, IB students gained a clearer understanding of the Extended Essay and began to narrow down their subject choices. It is hoped that students will showcase their talents during the research process and enjoy the journey of exploration and discovery.
