SHSID Middle and Primary School Professional Development Day
On December 25th, the final Teacher Professional Development Day of this semester kicked off, eloquently introduced by Mr. Ni Minxue, Director of MPTC.
At 8:30 a.m., Dr. Chen Chun, Assistant Professor of the School of Humanities and Social Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, presented a lecture on "Students' Social Emotional Competence and Mental Health: Applying Psychological Counseling Skills to Daily Conversations in Schools." Dr. Chen explained Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in a simple and profound way. Using specific cases, she
demonstrated how the wisdom and techniques of psychological counseling can be integrated into daily teaching to better understand students' inner worlds and support the development of their psychological resilience and social-emotional competencies.
Following the expert lecture, the exciting event "Beyond the Questions — Thematic Activities of Propositional Practice under the IL Framework" commenced. Twenty-four teachers from the Puxi, Zhangjiang, Lingang, and Hongkou Campuses formed four competing teams: Red, Yellow, Blue, and Green. In the Hsi Auditorium, these teams engaged in a friendly and unique competition.
"Masters debate with boundless insight, each exchange a treasure of wisdom; Year-end challenges bring thoughtful delight, each question rooted in teaching purpose." As hosted by Mr. Ni Minxue, the "Lots of Fun" Hands-On and Minds-On Skills Competition began. Vice Principal Mr. Shen Tianyuan and Grade 7 Head Teacher Ms. Shen Ying led off with a warm-up round of "You Act, I Guess." During the game, the four groups
displayed seamless collaboration, and their lively performances added joy to the scene.
The second part, Encyclopedia Quiz, featured engaging questions that tested the teachers' knowledge and quick-thinking abilities. Each correct answer was met with enthusiastic applause and cheers, creating a lively and spirited atmosphere.
After the quiz, the "Lots of Challenges" IL (Independent Learner) Real Test Questions Challenge, hosted by Ms. Zheng Wenyin, took center stage. The main purpose of the challenge was to showcase, share and exchange a variety of multidisciplinary approaches and practices under IL framework. Participants demonstrated their expertise, tackling subject-based questions with composure and precision. Heads of Subject Departments provided thoughtful evaluations, highlighting each subject group's understanding and application of the IL framework in fostering essential competencies through innovative
question design.
The final round of Quick Response Questions brought the atmosphere to a thrilling climax. The four teams on stage competed with enthusiasm, while the supporters in the stands cheered passionately, fueling the competitive spirit.
Finally, Team Yellow won the championship with their outstanding performance, earning the Winning Medal. Teams Red, Green, and Blue received Excellent Prizes. Principal Liu Lian, along with Vice Principals Shen Tianyuan and Liu Fang awarded medals and gorgeous prizes to the four teams and took a group photo with all participants.
Principal Liu Lian delivered an inspiring closing speech, emphasizing that a good school is one where students experience happiness and joy, and where independent thinking is cultivated. He noted that today’s lecture and knowledge competitions perfectly aligned with these values, showcasing our school’s continuous efforts to shape its curriculum and evaluation in this direction.
"Within and beyond the questions, how much delight we've found; Know it or not, its uses are truly boundless and profound." With these rhyming lines, Director Ni Minxue brought the event to a perfect close. The "wonders" of propositional practice shared during the event are expected to inspire fresh perspectives and new approaches for teachers in cultivating student competencies under the IL framework in their future
teaching.
