SHSID's NHS and Smile Charity United to Bring Warmth in Winter
Over the past year, the National Honors Society (NHS) at SHSID has been building bridges through education. Their dedication extended to a school in Henan, where they taught English vocabulary and nurtured creativity through art, hosting online lessons every week during this semester. Approaching the new year, their commitment took on a new form—one focused on bringing comfort and joy.
The initiative, titled “Bringing Warmth to Winter,” was led by Sophia Fang, Vice President of NHS, in collaboration with Lucas Chen, President of Smile Charity—a club known for knitting scarves to support those in need. Together, they organized a heartfelt project to bring holiday cheer to the Henan school community.
In the weeks leading up to the new year, NHS students and Smile Charity members worked to craft over 90 scarves, each made with care and attention, and create personalized greeting cards, writing thoughtful holiday messages, to connect with the recipients on a personal level. The combination of these gifts—the tangible warmth of the scarves and the heartfelt words in the cards—added a special touch to the holiday season.
On a cold December morning, the scarves and cards were carefully packed and sent to Henan. The response was immediate and heartwarming. Photos and videos of smiling students wearing the scarves and reading their cards made their way back to SHSID soon, showing how much the gesture was appreciated. Teachers from the school there also expressed their gratitude for the effort and thoughtfulness behind the gifts.
The collaboration between NHS and Smile Charity reflects the values of SHSID students: compassion, creativity, and a commitment to making a difference. As the year comes to a close, “Bringing Warmth to Winter” stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when students come together with a shared purpose. It’s not just a story about gifts; it’s about the warmth that comes from genuine connections and acts of kindness.
