Primary and Middle School English Department: 2024 Academic Year PBA Showcase

January 9, 2025

In weeks 15 through 18, the SHSID Middle School English Department held its exciting PBA Showcase for grades 6-8. In each grade, students had to demonstrate their ability to be Independent Learners and Responsible Global Citizens by completing long term, diversity projects that challenged them and allowed them to grow in new ways as students and learners.

This semester in English class, sixth graders have embarked upon a journey full of reading, research, writing, thinking, and presenting. Students use their skills to create a short video explaining all the information we collected. Ivy Wang and Catherine Yu won first place.

The 7th-grade students’ performances of Coraline and A Christmas Carol were a delightful showcase of talent, teamwork. Kicking off with Neil Gaiman’s Coraline, from the mysterious other mother to the unsettling button-eyed world, each scene was delivered with a balance of suspense and creativity. Divided into four groups, each ensemble then masterfully brought a unique part of the timeless story of A Christmas Carol to life. The students demonstrated impressive acting skills and an evident understanding of the material.

The students of grade eight attended the long anticipated BEDDS Film Festival—an awarding ceremony for the outstanding English PBA movie trailers. The trailers are evaluated from multiple perspectives, including costume, sound mixing, editing, acting performance, cinematic effects, and popularity. The popularity award winner was the Red Card, which also won the Best Costume Award.

All in all, these projects allowed students to be creative problem solvers and risk-takers, and helped studnets enhance their creativity. The students truly demonstrated their ability to engage with different mediums in new and creative ways. Teachers from across all the grades and subjects in middle school expressed admiration for the students’ astounding creativity and informational literacy.
