Glazed Colors and Chemical Poetry — Glaze and Chemistry Exhibition Held on Campus
In January 2025, on the campus of SHSID, chemistry and art met, science and culture intertwined, and a unique "Glaze and Chemistry Exhibition" arrived as the semester came to an end.
Glaze, as a treasure of ancient Chinese ceramic culture, carries the ultimate pursuit of beauty by the Chinese people over thousands of years. In the meticulously designed PBL (Project-Based Learning) course by the chemistry team, students traveled through history, re-examining this ancient craft from a scientific perspective. They not only learned the chemical formulas for ceramic glazes but also explored the transformation of oxides at high temperatures through experiments, mixing glazes, and creating their own artistic pottery.
On the exhibition, the vibrant ceramic works were quietly displayed on the tables, each embodying the students' wisdom and efforts. From the rich green to the gentle blue, these pieces not only reappeared the diversity of Chinese ceramic art but also highlighted the unique charm of chemical principles in art.
The significance of this exhibition goes far beyond just showcasing art pieces; it is the embodiment of an interdisciplinary educational philosophy. The course is designed to allow students to combine the chemical knowledge learned in class with real-world problems through hands-on practice. The formula for ceramic glazes, the chemical reactions during the firing process, and the control of temperature all reflect the rigor and scientific nature of chemistry.
Chemistry has given new life to art, and art has infused chemistry with inspiration and poetry. In this journey of "Glaze and Chemistry," the high school students not only crafted exquisite artistic pieces with their hands but also carried forward the eternal charm of glaze culture with their hearts.
