Puxi Campus G4-8 | Fire Drill

March 3, 2025

To further enhance fire safety awareness and improve emergency response capabilities, the Puxi Campus of Shanghai High School International Division organized a fire evacuation drill for all students and teachers from grades 4 through 8. By simulating a fire scenario, the drill helped participants become familiar with escape routes, learn self-rescue techniques, and strengthen overall safety measures on campus.

At the start of each semester, the school places great emphasis on safety education. This year, homeroom teachers from grades 4 through 8 organized class meetings focused on fire safety. During these sessions, teachers used the campus floor plans to explain evacuation routes, safety exits, and the multiple locations where firefighting equipment is stored, while also highlighting key procedures and important points to remember during the drill. Students also actively engaged in discussions, sharing their own understanding of fire prevention and escape strategies. This interaction made it clear that regular drills and practice are essential in ensuring that, in an actual emergency, students and staff can respond calmly and evacuate in an organized and efficient manner.

Additionally, teachers presented videos and case studies to illustrate the dangers of fire and the basic methods of self-rescue, such as covering the mouth and nose with a wet towel and crouching low while evacuating. By practicing these escape techniques, students not only learned important theoretical knowledge but also gained practical experience in handling emergencies.

On the afternoon of February 27, the fire alarm sounded suddenly, signaling the start of the drill. Without hesitation, students and teachers from grades 4 through 8 immediately ceased all activities and quickly entered emergency mode. Under the guidance of their teachers, students covered their mouths and noses with towels or sleeves, crouched low, and evacuated the building in a calm and orderly manner, following the designated routes. Throughout the evacuation, students remained composed and focused, with no pushing or chaos, which demonstrated their excellent preparedness.

Homeroom teachers promptly took attendance at the assembly point and communicated the status of the evacuation to the command center using color-coded signs. The entire process was a success, with all participants safely reaching the designated meeting point. The success of the drill can be attributed to the meticulous planning by each grade and the students’ thorough training in evacuation procedures.

After the drill, each class conducted a review and reflection session. Teachers praised the students for their calmness and orderliness during the evacuation process. They also used real-life fire cases to emphasize the significance of fire drills. Teachers reminded students that fires often occur unexpectedly, and only through regular drills can one stay calm in an emergency and effectively perform self-rescue. Students shared that the drill not only helped them master essential escape skills but also deepened their understanding of the critical importance of fire safety.

This fire drill was more than just a practice exercise; it was a vital lesson in safety education. For students, particularly in primary and middle school, building awareness of fire safety and enhancing their emergency response abilities are of utmost importance. Through this drill, students not only gained confidence in handling emergencies but also learned how to protect themselves and others in dangerous situations. Moving forward, the school will continue to organize regular safety drills, improve its emergency plans, and ensure that all students and staff can respond calmly in an actual emergency. Additionally, the school will continue offering various educational activities to promote safety awareness and create a safe, harmonious campus environment.
