High School English: Inkwell Insights from SHSID | Times
The session commenced with an introduction from six members of the TIMES editorial team. Each editor nominated a book of his or her choice from different genres, such as fiction, nonfiction, short story, and poem collection.
Following the introductions and recommendations, the student editors advised also on the art of reading. While the topic may initially appear self-evident, in truth, reading can start from anywhere, anytime. The importance lies in interests in its genre, content, or author, which could facilitate the approach to reading, and form the foundation for a deeper connection to literature.
The workshop also delved into the art of writing, as the editors shared invaluable tips and techniques, which is the foundation of publication. Two seemingly contradictory pieces of advice — “get to the point” and “do not get to the point” — were offered. Writers were encouraged to start with the main point to ensure clarity, and to refine the purpose of writing. On the other hand, to deviate from the point, or to write creatively, authors need to set their imagination free, to capture the spur of the moment with words.
A lively activity challenged participants to “judge a book by its cover,” sparking discussions on book selection and first impressions. The session concluded with a book-matching game, linking editors to books that shaped their perspectives.
The workshop wrapped up on a cheerful note, with students and editors celebrating their shared literary passion.
