Reading Week: Mr. Ma Boyong Read with SHSID Students

March 13, 2025

In the spring-imbued reading month, different departments meticulously orchestrated a series of splendid cultural feasts. As the activities progressed, on the day of March 12th, we welcomed the climax of the reading week—a special lecture delivered by the renowned author Mr. Ma Boyong, adding a rich and colorful stroke to our reading journey.

On the day of the lecture, the Zhongxing Building's small theater was filled to capacity. Students gathered early, brimming with anticipation, eagerly awaiting the arrival of this literary feast.

Mr. Ma Boyong began by humorously recounting his early writing journey, eliciting waves of laughter from the audience. He then shared his thoughts on "writing inspiration," emphasizing that "reading ten thousand books and traveling ten thousand miles" is essential, as inspiration is rooted in real-life experiences. His rich life experiences provided an endless wellspring of creativity. He also recommended the book Mountains of the Mind, whose simple yet profound prose, had deeply influenced his thinking. Beyond inspiration, he addressed a question many students were curious about—how to cultivate good writing skills. He explained that good writing is not about ornate language but about accurately expressing one's thoughts. Thus, good writing reflects strong logical thinking. Mr. Ma Boyong's words were witty and insightful, weaving in classical references and clever remarks, earning thunderous applause. As the lecture drew to a close, students eagerly asked questions, and Mr. Ma Boyong patiently answered, creating a lively and interactive atmosphere, reminiscent of the fresh vitality that follows a spring rain.

This week is Chinese Department‘s Reading Week. It is filled with a variety of engaging activities. From in-class book sharing sessions to poster presentations and the daily "Reading for You" broadcast, students immersed themselves in the wisdom of literature and found joy in reading. During the book-sharing activities, students from grades 9 to 12 created posters and recorded videos to passionately recommend their favorite Chinese books. Each meticulously designed poster was like a cultural landscape, showcasing their creativity. Meanwhile, the daily noon "Reading for You" broadcast became a heartfelt way to connect through literature. Each reader carefully selected classic excerpts, using their voices to deliver a literary feast for the entire school.

Both teachers and students were deeply moved by the Reading Week. Some students mentioned that during the reading festival, they shared their favorite books with the class and felt a great sense of accomplishment. Other students expressed that hearing the familiar voice of a good friend reading literary classics over the broadcast every noon was a novel and unique experience. Teachers noted that the event not only sparked students' interest in reading but also honed their expressive and creative abilities, making it a multifaceted success.

The significance of the Reading Week extends far beyond the activities themselves. It was a spiritual cleansing and a cultural inheritance. Through reading, students broadened their horizons, gained knowledge, and learned to think and express themselves more effectively. The passion for reading nurtured during this week will grow like tender grass, forever enriching the students' hearts.

This Reading Week not only provided students with a platform to showcase their talents but also infused new vitality into the school's cultural development. In the years to come, the Reading Week will continue to be passed down, thriving like the spring rain each year, quietly nourishing the minds and spirits of generations of students.
