IMO 2026 Logo Design Competition
In 2026, the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) will be held in Shanghai, hosted by the Shanghai High School on behalf of the Chinese Mathematical Society. It is worth mentioning that this is the first time the IMO has been held on a high school campus, and it is also the first time in 36 years that the competition has taken place in mainland China, making it a momentous occasion.
Seizing this opportunity, Shanghai High School organized a logo design competition, inviting students to show their understanding and expectations of the IMO through their own unique designs and perspectives, while also infusing the competition with youthful energy and innovative elements.
As soon as the news of the design competition was released, it sparked an enthusiastic response among the students from SHSID. They actively submitted their entries, demonstrating remarkable design talent, a passion for mathematics, and strong support for school activities. The students showed their creativity by skillfully integrating mathematical elements, Chinese traditional culture, and Shanghai's unique characteristics, creating a series of eye-catching works.
Some students combined traditional cultural elements such as carp and the Dragon Gate, using trigonometric functions to generate the ripples of the Huangpu River, symbolizing the participants as carps leaping over the Dragon Gate, riding the waves and striving for excellence in the ocean of mathematics. Others merged the endless knot from Chinese Buddhism with the infinity symbol in mathematics. The endless knot represents longevity and eternity, while the infinity symbol signifies the boundless possibilities of mathematics, together symbolizing the long-standing and ever-evolving nature of mathematical culture. Some students focused on the mathematical symbol for infinity and incorporated the numbers 6 and 7 to highlight the theme of the 67th IMO. Others combined the symbol π, elements of the Chinese national flag, iconic Shanghai architecture, and the school gate design on Shangzhong Road, showcasing both the charm of mathematics and the unique cultural characteristics of Chinese and Shanghai. Some students used the three letters of IMO as the main design elements, designing the letter I as the Oriental Pearl Tower, referencing the IMO logo's color scheme for the letter M, and creating the letter O from two olive branches, with colors and shapes inspired by the school emblem, cleverly integrating Shanghai's landmark architecture, IMO elements, and school features. There were also students who combined the year 2026 with silhouettes of Shanghai landmarks and the Longmen Building, using traditional Chinese ink colors to create an elegant and rustic atmosphere. Some students even designed multiple versions of the logo, demonstrating in-depth thinking and diverse attempts.
Currently, all the works designed by the students from SHSID are being displayed on the first floor of the Xianmian Hall and Zhongxing Building, attracting many teachers and students to pause and admire them. These works not only show the students' solid mathematical foundations and rich imaginations but also reflect their enthusiastic anticipation for the 2026 IMO to be held in Shanghai.
This logo design competition not only provided students with a platform to showcase themselves but also allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of the IMO, an international mathematics event. It is believed that in 2026, when the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad is held at Shanghai High School, these creative design works will become a beautiful highlight of the competition, leaving a deep impression on mathematics enthusiasts from around the world.
