March 28, 2025

With the spring breeze brushing past and the fragrance of books filling the campus, the High School Social Sciences Department brought students a series of reading activities during the March Reading Month! From classic book recommendations to the Future Business Leaders Forum and student-led reading-sharing sessions, we explored economic principles, decoded psychological mysteries, and let sparks of thought flourish through reading!

Winter Break Reading Recap & Sharing

After an immersive winter break of reading, students returned to economics classes with newfound insights. Teachers compiled a list of SHSID students' favorite economics and business books and invited everyone to share their reflections in class. Students also carefully designed reading highlight posters, which became an instant "check-in hotspot" after being displayed in Zhongxing Building, sparking lively discussions about economic trends and business case studies!

Future Business Leaders Forum – Face-to-Face with Industry Experts!

On March 5th and March 24th, we had the privilege of hosting four distinguished industry leaders, each offering unique perspectives on entrepreneurship, innovation, and life philosophy.

Four industry leaders shared valuable insights: Alex, CEO of KAWO, analyzed key entrepreneurial challenges from a founder's perspective; Julie, Partner at Belle Investment Management, systematically explained scientific decision-making methodologies; Chao Luo, Director of Grante Asia, illustrated how passion drives technological innovation through personal experiences; while Friso, Head Chef of Endo Restaurant, vividly demonstrated his cross-disciplinary journey from visual arts to culinary innovation. Each speaker offered unique professional wisdom and life reflections. These diverse career stories not only showcased different professional paths but also provided invaluable insights for young students planning their futures.

In addition to sharing valuable career insights, the four distinguished guests each recommended influential books that have profoundly shaped their professional thinking and approach. They highlighted The McKinsey Way as an essential read that reveals the core principles of efficient work and structured problem-solving. Another key recommendation was The Mom Test, a practical guide designed to help entrepreneurs develop effective questioning techniques to uncover genuine customer needs and avoid misleading feedback.

Student Sharing Session – Let Ideas Flow!

During Week 6, the Zhongxing Building reading room was transformed into an engaging "Social Sciences Salon," where seven students from Grades 10–12—Michele Tong, Lucia Liu, Annie Long, Alex Wang, Lily Fang, Janie Fu, and Minnie Chen—shared their reflections on a thought-provoking selection of books spanning economics and psychology.

The discussion covered Freakonomics, which uses big data to challenge conventional wisdom and uncover hidden societal patterns; Campaigns and Elections, a practical guide to the economic logic behind political power struggles; and Rich Dad Poor Dad, a compelling contrast between two financial philosophies that highlights the essence of financial literacy. The group also explored The Psychology of Moral Development, a systematic examination of how human morality evolves, and FBI Microexpressions, a fascinating behavioral guide that teaches how to interpret true emotions through subtle facial cues.

The salon created a lively intellectual exchange, allowing students to connect economic theories, psychological insights, and real-world applications in an interactive setting.
