Cyano Challenge Is Back! A Mini Eco Art Exhibition

March 31, 2025

The Cyano Challenge is back on March 27! Last year, the first Cyano Challenge hosted by the Cyano Club featured interactive games, trivia, and Cyano’s original magazine created by our members. Continuing this tradition, this year’s Cyano Challenge featured three lunchtime activities that taught participants how to repurpose old materials into new products. Moreover, the Cyano team worked hard to prepare our mini Eco Art Exhibit, featuring art pieces made from upcycled plastic bottles and paper.

This year’s Cyano Challenge theme is “Eco-friendly Creations,” aiming to demonstrate how environmentally friendly actions can be incorporated into our daily lives—we just have to be creative to make a change. Cyano members embody this mantra, as Cyano’s recycling bins, featured in our Eco Art Exhibit, resulted from hours of planning, designing, and hands-on crafting by Cyano’s members. This inspired us to share our creative solutions with our school community through the Cyano Challenge.

Participants learned to create and decorate tote bags from old T-shirts without any sewing or stitching required! They also had the chance to craft DIY pen holders from used plastic bottles and fruit wrappers. Additionally, we taught participants how to create scratch paper booklets from scrap paper—a perfect solution for students who do a lot of math calculations.

In the Eco Art Exhibit, participants learned about the story behind our “Plastic Ocean” art piece, a vibrant artwork made from upcycled materials, built on a strong message: 15 million metric tons of plastic waste enter Earth’s oceans and waterways each year. We also shared the creation process behind our two popular recycling bins—Fishy and Space Potato- both of which were made from upcycled materials. We hope to inspire students to contribute creatively to environmental sustainability, just as we have!

Our activities required hours of planning and preparation from Cyano members. We are grateful to all the participants who joined us and to all the teachers who supported us. The Cyano Challenge will be back soon!
