Grade 11 Assembly: Chinese Debating
On the morning of March 27, during Grade 11’s weekly assembly, Eric from 11(1) shared his experiences with Chinese-language debating. He began by showcasing his participation in numerous Chinese debate competitions, such as the World Middle School Chinese Debate Open Competition last winter break. He then presented photos and stories from various team-building activities, highlighting how the debate team, as a warm and supportive community, fosters deep bonds through extended in-person interactions and guidance from senior members.
Eric also elaborated on the intellectual growth that debating, as a language-based activity, has brought him. It has served as a reflection and summary of his existing learning and life experiences and an expansion of his horizons. He humorously illustrated this by showing how his teacher, Mr. Sun’s expectations of him connected to the debate topic "Is expectation a subtle form of violence or not?" Moreover, he applied his personal interest in economics to debates like "Does a four-day workweek benefit or harm developing economies?" Other topics, such as "Do current equality movements reinforce reverse discrimination?" and "Should AI-generated artworks be considered art?" have also inspired him to reflect deeply on the humanities, arts, and philosophy.
Additionally, he spoke about how the Chinese Debate Club, after evolving into a larger debate community, expanded its influence by organizing exhibition matches, friendship matches, and official tournaments both on and off campus. Towards the end, as Eric summarized how personal interests could be transformed into meaningful extracurricular activities, the students' diverse interests became closely connected to his sharing. After his talk, he also announced the recruitment of volunteers for the second "Tech Time Travel Cup" Debate competition, inviting students to participate in the event's volunteer services.
